This bag is inspired by the traditional saddlebags of the Antioquia region in Colombia. Originally used by coffee farmers during their arduous journeys on mules, the carriel holds a rich legacy steeped in the coffee culture of Western Colombia. Johanna Ortiz's interpretation of this traditional bag results in a unique piece that carries the magic, secrets, and spells of its heritage. To bring this mini carriel to life, the design team embarked on a journey to Jericó, Antioquia, a town renowned for its carriel production. In collaboration with Santiago Agudelo, a third-generation artisan from the Agudelo family, the team learned about the centuries-old sewing and construction traditions behind the authentic carriel. Santiago generously shared his knowledge, craft, and the magical lore associated with the bag.
